The Drill
It is the late 1950s: The cold war is in full swing, school desegregation is in its infancy, and the nuclear bomb looms over every American's head. During a citywide civil defense drill, three sixth-grade boys become increasingly worried when the drill lasts longer than previous ones. Tommy (brawny, not bright) doesn't accept Leroy's (a likeable black boy) presence, and Bertram (physically timid, intellectually confident) is desperate to find out what's going on outside. An air raid siren unexpectedly blares, and from the intercom, the principal orders everyone to move into the hall. Oblivious to events outside, hundreds of scared children are instructed to take cover along the hallway walls. The distinct sound of airplane engines approaches. A quiet terror overtakes the children. Then, to soothe himself, Leroy sings the theme from his favorite TV show, Mighty Mouse Playhouse. When Leroy forgets the words, Tommy chimes in. The plane engines dissipate and students are ordered back to class. Tension is lifted. Everyone is noticeably shaken, and once resettled in the classroom Tommy invites Leroy to his house to watch his own favorite show: The Lone Ranger. Bertram, who had until now accepted the fact that his parents don't let him watch TV or movies, asks to come watch, too. The three boys have overcome their individual obstacles together, and in doing so rebel against the societal 'norms' set by their parents' generation.

In the Midst of a Movement
In the Midst of a Movement weaves together the stories of five journalists born and raised in the South. Some are white, some are black, and most went to work for major news organizations. Returning to the Deep South to cover the Civil Rights movement, they faced threats of physical injury and risked their lives to report about the unfair practices of segregation and the violent methods with which those practices were being enforced.
